Mitchell County

Colorado City

The Sanborn maps for Colorado, Texas dated 1886 (Sheet 3), 1891 (Sheet 2), and 1896 (Sheet 1) depict a two-story stone jail in city block 24 facing Pine Street.  A two-story brick courthouse was located to the east at 608 Oak Street (city block 24).  It was built in 1881 and the stone jail was built in 1882.  In 1896 (Sheet 1) there was a brick calaboose next to the two-story police station at 509 Walnut (city block 23). Prior to that time it is not known what form of lockup (if any) was present in the town but it could have been the small calaboose that appears to have only been one story. In 1902 (Sheet 3) the police station and calaboose were gone and replaced by an opera house that was built in 1899. The stone city jail and courthouse were still present.
