Webb County

Laredo

In 1885 (Sheet 1) there was a one-story brick jail depicted on the Sanborn fire insurance map in Laredo, Texas. It was located next to the brick county jail at 210 Farragut Street (block 61). This jail is larger than the typical calaboose.  Behind it was a much smaller one-story vacant brick building in lot 4 that could have been an earlier calaboose that was used prior to the completion of the larger jail. The smaller building was still standing in 1889 (Sheet 1), 1894 (Sheet 7), 1900 (Sheet 7), 1905 (Sheet 6), and 1909 (Sheet 6).   The old county jail had been converted to the office of the County Clerk. In 1905 (Sheet 9), the larger brick jail was referred to as a former jail and there was a new two-story brick county jail on Houston Street in city block 65.
