Rusk County

Overton

A small one-story wood lockup is depicted on the Sanborn fire insurance maps dated 1893 (Sheet 1) and 1907 (Sheet 1) in the town of Overton, Texas. It was located at 309 Rusk Street (city block 5) next to a large corral on the west and a cotton yard on the north.  In 1907 the corral was gone.  The area showing the cotton yard is not depicted on that map.  The 1907 map was the latest one available at the time of this study.  Perhaps the wood lockup is still present.

While talking to an old man in front of the grocery store, in Laneville ,Tx. an old man told of a old jail that was used long ago. The structure is across the street and to the best of my memory it is made of concrete.

      Mr. Blanton,

Thanks very much for your information. I was not aware of the calaboose in Laneville. I need to plan a trip there soon. If you have time would you ask around for me to see who owns it and if I need special permission to visit it. Also, I would love a photo to see if it is the kind of jail I am interested in before I make the trip. Today, I am leaving for Jonah, TX to document a calaboose there. Tomorrow, I can make some calls to see what I can learn. If you want to comment on jails the website is a good place but if you want to contact me for other reasons or send a picture please use my email – bvracrm@gmail.com. Thanks again.
