In 1939, there was a one-story reinforced concrete city jail in the approximate middle of city block 22.  It was moved from its original location in town to private property in order to preserve it and it stands there today.  See discussion under Calabooses.

Troup

The 1919 Sanborn fire insurance map (Sheet 2) depicts a small concrete jail in Troup, Texas. It was located in city block 4 near Duval and Georgia streets. Gilmer Woods was an early resident of Troup.  In A Century of the History of Troup, Texas: 1850s-1950s compiled by the Troup Genealogical/Historical Society, Inc. and Friends of the Library (published by Best of East Texas, Lufkin in 2009) Woods (Page 100) is quoted as saying that Jim Adams was the first peace officer in Troup and in charge of the city jail that he describes as a concrete room about twelve feet square and built over a small creek that ran behind the Troup business district. Other enforcers of the law had titles such as Night Watchman, Constable, City Marshall, and Police Chief. It was still standing in 1934. Melanie Brumit works at the Troup library and she said that this jail is no longer present.

 Tyler

The 1885 Sanborn fire insurance map (Sheet 3) depicts a small one-story brick calaboose in Tyler, Texas located next to the two-story brick Smith County Jail (city block 18).   It was gone in 1889 (Sheet 3) but the county jail was still there.  At that time there was a two-story brick building at the corner of North College and West Locust streets that housed a calaboose and hook and ladder facility on the first floor and City Hall on the second floor.  The county jail was still present In 1898 (Sheet 6) and the calaboose on the first floor of the building that housed City Hall was gone. In 1907 (Sheet 5) this building had three small cells but they were gone In 1912 (Sheet 9).  A new county jail made of reinforced concrete was present in 1919 (Sheet 3).  The three cells at City Hall could have been temporary while the new county jail was being constructed.
