Victoria County

Victoria

The 1885 Sanborn map (Sheet 1) depicts a small one-story wood calaboose and one-story brick jail in Victoria, Texas. The brick jail was referred to in 1885 as  “old and vacant.” Both buildings were in the courthouse square located at the 500 block of Bridge Street.   A two-story brick county jail was also present.  This suggests that the calaboose and brick jail may have preceded the larger county jail. In 1891 (Sheet 1) the abandoned brick jail was described as two-story and the wood calaboose is gone. The old brick jail remained through 1907 but was not depicted on the 1908 Sanborn map.  The U.S. Census does not list any prisoners in the Victoria calaboose in 1910 (based on incomplete returns) (Hill 1918:294).
