Beds

Randy Reynolds discovered this very nice metal cage on the lawn next to the Smith County courthouse.  It measures 110 inches across the front and 78 inches on each side (59.15 square feet).  The height is 77 inches.  There are two cells of equal size with a door to each one.  Each cell has two metal bed platforms that measure 24 inches by 72 inches.  The beds are attached to the wall that separates the cells. The doors were measured at 25 inches wide and 75.5 inches tall.

This metal cage was built by the Pauly Jail Building Co. in St. Louis, Missouri.  The age of its manufacture is not known but the strap iron construction with cold rivets suggests sometime in the latter part of the 19th century.  The construction is similar to other Pauly cages that are in Crawford, Montgomery, and Valley Mills.
