McGregor

A wood calaboose is depicted on the Sanborn map dated 1894 (Sheet 1) in McGregor, Texas. It was located at the corner of Avenue R and 15th Street.  I did not see it on any of the maps for 1899.   In 1904 (Sheet 2) there was a small wood lockup near the corner of 13th Street and Avenue Q next to the sidetracks of the Saint Louis & Southwestern Railroad. The next calaboose is depicted on the Sanborn map dated 1922 (Sheet 3).  It was a small wooden jail near the corner of South Lamar and Southeast 3rd streets in an open area facing South Lamar and near the Pierce Oil Corporation oil depot.  According to Ronnie Moe and Pat Fehler, the only calaboose left is the concrete structure in downtown McGregor next to the American Legion Hall at 202 South Jefferson between West 2nd and West 3rd streets (see Calabooses).

Mart

There were only two Sanborn maps available for Mart, Texas at the time of this study.  They are dated June 1909 and August 1915. No jails were seen on the 1909 map but the 1915 map (Sheet 2) depicts a small one-story wood calaboose in city block 5 bounded by Texas Street on the east, Main Street on the south, and Front Street on the west. This block was divided into three parts and the calaboose was in the large block at the top behind a brick grocery store whose address was 537 Texas Avenue.  According to the City Manager, a metal cell from one of the previous jails is in City Hall. It is not known at this time if it was in the calaboose on Main Street.

Ruth Foster has been a resident of Riesel since the 1970s.  She told me that their calaboose was moved there in 1910 from Mart.  The 1909 Mart Sanborn map shows a small wooden building with no label in approximately the same location as the 1915 map with the calaboose.  Perhaps, the structure on the 1909 map was no longer being used as a calaboose and the town was getting ready to move it.

Moody

The Sanborn fire insurance map dated 1902 (Sheet 1) depicts a wood calaboose in the town of Moody, Texas.  It was located at 304 Avenue F in City Block 28.  It was gone in 1907 (Sheet 1) and no other calabooses or jails were seen on the 1912 and 1920 Sanborn maps.

 West

The Sanborn map dated 1900 (Sheet 1) shows a wooden calaboose in West, Texas.  It was in City Block 9 in an alley between lots 23 and 24 on the east and 22 on the west. In 1905 it was in the same block but it was moved or rebuilt and at that time was in the north end of lot 20 between the fire department and West Water, Power, and Light and faced West Pine Street.  In 1911 (Sheet 2) it was in the same location. In 1921 the fire department and utility plant were increased in size and moved.  The street addresses had changed and a small one-story wooden building was at 320 Pine Street in what appears to be the same location as the calaboose depicted on the 1911 map but it is not labeled as such.  I drove to West but saw no evidence of a calaboose still standing.
