Fayette County

La Grange

There was a brick calaboose in La Grange, Texas in 1885. According to the Sanborn fire insurance map (Sheet 1) it was located in City Block 33 north and west of the three-story county jail on the same block near the corner of Main and Crockett streets. In 1890 (Sheet 2) it was still there but not labeled as a calaboose and appears to be vacant. On the 1896, 1901, and 1906 maps it described as vacant. In 1912 (Sheet 3) it appears to be attached to the wooden Fire Department building. Perhaps it was used for storage. In 1921 (Sheet 3) it was in the same location and labeled as a jail annex. Since there are no Sanborn maps available prior to 1885 it is possible that it predates the county jail. The next jail in town was made of concrete and referred to locally as a Hoosegow. It is still standing on the grounds of the old county jail (see Calabooses).

Darryl Pearson found a photograph of a calaboose in LaGrange next to the one that is currently standing.  It appears to be made of concrete but perhaps it is the brick one discussed above and it was covered with plaster.  The last Sanborn map I was able to review was dated 1921 and the current calaboose was not present.  Based on the truck in the picture, this calaboose was still standing until the late 50s or into the 60s.  There are two Sanborn maps I have not seen that are dated 1930 and 1938.  Perhaps one of these will show the current calaboose.

I saw a reference to a calaboose in this town but I have no more information at this time.
