Archer County

Archer City

According to Ed Blackburn, Jr. (2006:22-23), the first jail in town was built in 1882.  It was a square wooden structure 16 ft. x 16 ft.  The walls were made of pine boards laid on top of one another and nailed down with large spikes.  These boards were 4 in. x 6 in. There were two small windows and a steel door. It was used until 1910 when it was replaced by a three-story sandstone jail.  There were no Sanborn maps for Archer City at the time of this study.
