Kaufman County

Forney

The first Sanborn fire insurance map for Forney, Texas is dated 1896 and there are no jails or calabooses depicted on the four sheets available.  In 1901 (Sheet 2), there was a small one-story wood lockup north of the Texas and Pacific Railroad in an open area with no street address.  It was still in the same location in 1906 (Sheet 2) and 1912 (Sheet 2).   in 1919 (Sheet 2) it was in the same general location but was referred to as a calaboose.  According to a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Department it is no longer there.  It is possible that the two wooden calabooses represent different structures, but the location and size are too close to make this determination.
