Waller County

Brookshire

I saw a reference to a calaboose in this town but I have no more information at this time.

Hempstead

The Sanborn map (Sheet 1) dated July 1877 depicts a one-story wooden calaboose in Hempstead, Texas. It was located at 30 Austin Street in the Public Square. It was still there in 1885 (Sheet 1), but the address had been changed to 214 Austin. At that time, it was behind a barbershop and next to a meat market. In 1891 (Sheet 1), the only calaboose in town was a one-story wooden building in the approximate center of the Public Square next to a cistern. It was still there in July of 1896 (Sheet 1). In November of 1901 (Sheet 3), it was gone and replaced by a two-story brick county jail next to the courthouse in city block 165. In 1921, the brick county jail was still the only one in town.
