Wharton County

El Campo

There are three Sanborn fire insurance maps for El Campo, Texas: 1907, 1912, and 1922. The 1922 map was published in October and Sheet 4 depicts a one-story stone jail with reinforced concrete walls at 206 Merchant Street (city block 8, lot 2).  At that time it was next to a one-story wooden building at the corner of Merchant and East Jackson streets.   According to the police department spokesperson, there is no small jail or calaboose still standing. There is one old jail that has three cells and several offices but it does not fit the calaboose model.
